We’re Not the Villains You Pretend We Are

Let’s address the lie.

The one that’s been recycled for decades, dressed up in new clothes, and passed around by people who’ve never bothered to actually meet us.

They say cannabis users are lazy.
They say we’re irresponsible.
They say we’re bad people because we “do drugs.”

They say we’re a problem.

But here’s the funny thing about lies — they fall apart the moment facts walk into the room.

So let’s talk facts.

Let’s talk about who actually makes up the cannabis community, because it sure as hell isn’t the cartoon villain you’ve been warned about.

Upstate Canna Dispensary on Union Street in Schenectady — the entire crew — spent an entire weekend picking up trash and cleaning their city. No cameras. No profit. No PR stunt. Just people giving their time and energy because they care about where they live.

Hudson Valley Green and Damn Sam hosted an event during the holidays that raised money and food for families in need. Not to look good. Not to sell weed. Not to benefit themselves. Simply because there were children and families who needed help — and they answered.

That’s the cannabis community.

And inside the community?
It goes even deeper.

Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it’s profitable.
But because compassion is baked into this culture.

You don’t see that part, though — because it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Here’s another truth you might not like:
Many of us don’t use cannabis to escape life. We use it to function in it.

We’re medicating anxiety.
We’re managing chronic pain.
We’re sleeping without nightmares.
We’re eating when our bodies forget how.

And yes — many of us are godly, faithful, spiritually grounded people who serve our communities with our hearts wide open.

We pray.
We volunteer.
We show up.

And we do it quietly.

We don’t walk around acting like we’re better than anyone else — but when the facts are laid out honestly, it becomes real clear: a whole lot of people in this community are doing more good than many of the folks throwing stones from the outside.

Sit with us.
Talk to us.
Watch how we move when nobody’s watching.

Because the truth is simple:

The cannabis community is full of big hearts.
Hard workers.
Caregivers.
Volunteers.
Believers.
Neighbors.

We’re not the stigma you cling to.

We’re the people quietly holding communities together — one act of kindness at a time.

And if you’re part of this community and reading this right now?

Stand tall.

Because you already know who you are.
